Al Azhar Bumi Serpong Damai Islamic Senior High School for the first time started the admission of new students in the 1996/1997 Academic Year. At the beginning of the opening, all learning activities used the building together with the Al Azhar Bumi Serpong Damai Islamic Junior High School unit.
SMA Islam Al Azhar Bumi Serpong Damai was founded by the Bumi Serpong Damai Muslim Foundation with a Decree, number: SK-05 / YMBSD / VI / 1996, dated: July 1, 1996; located at Jalan Puspita Loka Sektor III.2 Bumi Serpong Damai, Serpong District, Tangerang Regency, Banten Province, occupying a building owned by the Bumi Serpong Damai Muslim Foundation.
The operational permit for the Al Azhar Bumi Serpong Damai Islamic High School was issued through a Decree of the Head of the Regional Office of the West Java Education and Culture Department, Number: 34 / 102.1 / Kep / OT / 1998, dated January 15, 1998. In the 2000/2001 Academic Year of SMA Islam Al Azhar BSD has been accredited, and the status of the school has become SAME according to the West Java Regional Office of Education Decree No. 27 / 102.7g / MN / 2000, dated January 26, 2000, then re-accredited by the School Accreditation Board (BASDA) with the Decree of the Banten Province School Accreditation Board Number: 02 / BAS / MN / IV / 2005, dated 18 April 2005 with a value ACCREDITED A, and then re-accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Schools / Madrasahs (BAN-S / M) with Decree Number: 28.00.SMA / MA.051.09, dated 17 October 2009 with an ACCREDITED score of A (96.08), then re-accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Schools / Madrasahs (BAN-S / M) with Decree Number: 71 / BAP-S / M-SK / XI / 2014, dated November 2, 2014 with an ACCREDITED score of A (98), and at the end of 2019 it is re-accredited with decision Number: 755 / BAN-SM / SK / 2019 dated September 9, 2019 with an ACCREDITED value of A (98), SMA Islam Al Azhar BSD until the 2019/2020 Academic Year has graduated as many as 22 students with a passing rate of 100%
SMA Islam Al Azhar BSD seeks to be adaptive to the development of national education including the implementation of a new curriculum including Competency-Based Curriculum (2004), where the Al Azhar BSD Islamic High School was appointed by the Ministry of Education's Curriculum Center as a pilot for competency-based curriculum development representing the province of Banten recommendation of Head of Education Office of Banten Province No. 420/179 / Dindik / 2002 dated 25 April 2003 and the Head of the Tangerang Regency Education Office No.421.1 / 420.3 / 762 / Dindik on 8 May 2002 and Al-Azhar BSD Islamic High School including records as a 2013 Curriculum Pilot School (K-13), which implements SKS (Semester Credit Units) at the beginning of the 2016/2017 new lesson to date with a specialization in Science and Social Sciences.
